Authored By: Scientists have cured a form of blindness by using stem cells cultured on a contact less. Patients who have lost their sight due to diseases of the cornea have regained their vision thanks to the breakthrough procedure.
Researchers from the School of Medical Sciences at the University of New South Wales took stem cells from each patients' eyes, then cultured the cells on a normal contact lens.
The lens was then placed on the patient's cornea for 10 days, and the stem cells repaired the eye enough to improve the patient's eyesight significantly within just a few weeks.
The entire process is simple, affordable, and non-invasive. The researchers believe the process could heal other parts of the eye, including the retina, as well as skin and major organs.
