Authored By: Chronic back pain afflicts 40-60% of adults in the US every year. For people with severe degenerative disc disease, the only treatment is to remove the disc, and then fuse the bones of the vertebrate.
Afterwards most patients feel that their back never retruns to normal. Someday soon there may be a better option. Researchers at Weill Cornell Medical College and Cornell University have created bio-engineered discs that could be used in transplants.
The scientists used cells from patients who have had a disc removed. Then the cells are grown in a culture on a scaffold that is shapped like a disc.
Results on rats so far have been successful, and clinical trials on humans may follow. Eventually people with injured discs may be able to simply grow new ones.
